Description: Many people have fond memories of sitting on a front porch on a warm summer evening— sharing stories with family members or neighbors, reading a good book or simply daydreaming. Others may recall a game of badminton or horseshoes, a stroll through garden pathways or a nap in a shaded hammock.
The Chapman’s summer exhibition will explore the meaning of man-made outdoor spaces in the 19th century. Porches and gardens did more than provide decoration or escape from the summer heat. Outdoor spaces were settings for parties, meals, stories and music, games and sports, courtship and reunions. These spaces also were places where one could read, draw, paint, sleep, and find solitude.
The exhibit will offer visitors the opportunity to experience the meaning of exterior spaces - not simply read about it. Families will be able to sit in rockers on a front porch and chat or play old fashioned games. Visitors also will be able to play croquet or plant flowers to take home.
OUTSIDE THE HOUSE is guest curated by Jane Mackintosh. The project is funded in part by grants from the Leo Cox Beach Philanthropic Foundation and the New York State Council on the Arts, a state agency. Local sponsors include Curtis Lumber Co., Inc., Watkins Garden Center, and Jim Girard Landscape Maintenance.
