OSWEGO COUNTY 

Revolutionary War Encampment

Description:  Revolutionary War Encampment at Old Fort Ontario featuring tactical weapons demonstrations, living history activities, musket firing, cannon firing, 18th century crafts, music, children's games, sutlers selling reproduction 18th century goods and clothing, refreshments, and a public tavern located in an underground stone casemate featuring period foods, non-alcoholic beverages, a taciturn tavern keeper, and staff in period cloths.

Directions: Take Route 104 from either east or west and turn north on East 4th Street towards Lake Ontario. From the east take Exit 34A to I81 North, get into the far left lane to I-481 North to Oswego.  Turn right on Route 104 East and then left on East 4th Street. From the west take the Weedsport Exit; turn left onto Route 34 North to Route 104.  Turn right (east) on Route 104, cross the Oswego River and turn left on East 4th Street.

Public Transportation: Seven blocks.  Call 315-343-4711 and we will pick you up at the corner of Routes 481 and 104.  Or, if coming by boat we will pick you up at the East or Westside Marina.  

Note:  Forts were designed to be inaccessible. We have electric carts available for those who have difficulty walking or climbing steep slopes.  PLEASE call ahead or contact the cashier immediately upon arrival so we can accommodate your needs (315) 343-4711.  We want you to experience as much of this beautiful site as possible.

Historic House Tours

Description: See canal boat replicas and displays of life and industries in an Oswego Canal town at an Italian style historic home built in 1861 by John Wells Pratt, a local canal boat builder and operator. Displays focus primarily on history of local industries and businesses, early transportation, education, recreation, and family life including a period kitchen. Many unique and affordable items available in the Gift and Bookstore. Genealogical and research material available on request. The John Wells Pratt House is listed on the National and New York State Register of Historic Sites.

Driving directions: From I-90 take exit 34A to Route 481N (Oswego/Watertown exit); Take Route 481 North to Fulton, Left on Route 3 West (E. Broadway St.); Right before bridge onto South First Street; Museum located on right at 177 South First Street.

Driving directions: 35 East Cayuga Street, is the east side fire station. The museum is directly behind the fire station. Exit 34a to 481 to Oswego straight ahead to 104 east (bridge street, turn right at light go to east 3rd street turn left fire station is directly in frount of you Cayuga street turn left and go into old price chopper parking lot go to the end of fire station and museum is to the right.

Note: Parking all along old Price Chopper lot. Handicap accessible.

Oneida Fish Cultural Station

  • Description: Each year the NYSDEC releases over one million pounds of fish into more than 1,200 public streams, rivers, lakes, and ponds across NYS. Fish are stocked to restore native species to waters they formerly occupied and to enhance recreational fishing.  The coolwater hatchery in Constantia specializes in raising walleye and is open to the public daily.

Description:  The Safe Haven Museum commemorates the story of the Fort Ontario Emergency Refugee Shelter. It was the only Shelter in United States for victims of the WWII Holocaust. There will be guided tours of the Museum and special presentations throughout the day.

Description: This park derived its name from a battle which took place on a nearby island on the Oswego River in the mid-1700s. In 1916 most of the land owned by F. A. Emerick was deeded to the state. Battle Island officially became a state park in 1938 when the remaining land was turned over.
